1) What is the cost of an initial consultation?
The independent dermatologists we support set their own fees for consultations. The fees set by the consultants are generally in line with what are recommended as fair and reasonable by the Australian Medical Association. With a valid referral, a Medicare card holder is able to obtain a rebate through Medicare. The fees are reviewed annually and discounted fees may be offered to holders of a valid aged pension card, disability pension card and health care card holders, subject to the presentation of a valid card at the time of your consultation. Holders of a Department of Veterans Affairs Health card (Gold card or white card specifying skin treatment) have their fees directly billed to DVA (excepting cosmetic procedures).
Consultations and no out of pocket treatment costs are available at the major public teaching hospitals who have out-patient dermatology departments – Prince of Wales, St Vincent’s and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals in this area.
2) Costs of cosmetic treatments
These are dependent on the exact treatment required and the extent of therapy – it is recommended that you discuss any treatments you wish to pursue with your specialist dermatologist in a formal consultation before proceeding so that a realistic expectation of results and costs can be provided.
3) What are the practice hours?
Monday to Friday 8.00am to 5.00pm, excluding public holidays. Your dermatologist may have different consulting hours within these times.
4) Do I need a referral?
It is in your best interests to obtain a referral to see a dermatologist from your general practitioner. This should be done prior to booking your appointment. A referral ensures that your doctor(s)will receive a report of your consultation with your dermatologist, helping to keep your health record complete and up to date.
A valid referral also allows you to receive the maximum rebate applicable toyour visit when it is processed by Medicare. Please check the validity of yourreferral when your book your subsequent visits.
The referral is your responsibility. It would be unethical and inappropriate to ask Reception to contact your doctor for a referral.
A new referral is also required if the condition for which you seek treatment and advice is different to the original condition referred for initially.
Please refer to Referrals under Patient Information for more information.
5) Do you bulk bill?
Independent dermatologists working from ESD, set their own private fees. Holders of a Department of Veterans Health Card may have recognised conditions treated and paid for by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Consultation and treatment at no out of pocket cost are available at major public hospital dermatology outpatients’ department – Prince of Wales – Randwick, St Vincent’s – Darlinghurst and Royal Prince Alfred – Camperdown. Your dermatologist’s fees are payable in full on the day of consultation.
6) Repeat Prescriptions
Requests for repeat prescriptions generally will not be issued without your condition being reviewed by your dermatologist.
