Fees

The independent dermatologists we support set their own fees for consultations. Consultation fees are generally in line with those considered fair and reasonable by the Australian Medical Association (AMA). Please note the independent dermatologists consulting from Eastern Suburbs Dermatology are each in private medical practice.

Consultations and treatment at no out of pocket cost are only available at major public hospital outpatients’ department – Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney Children’s Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

When does your doctor expect payment?

Your doctor will require you to pay your full fees at the time of your consultation. If your doctor takes tissue samples, pathology fees are not included in the additional service costs, and a separate account will be issued by the pathology provider. Certain additional surgical services such as excision removal of tumours cannot be charged by your doctor until the result of the pathology test is known as per Medicare reimbursement requirements and an invoice will be provided and payable to your doctor once the test results are received.

Pathology Fees

Where your dermatologist determines that a specimen of tissue needs analysis by a specialist pathologist, a separate account may be issued directly to you by the pathology provider. This account is separate to the account issued by your dermatologist.

Concessions

Holders of a current Australian Government-issued Aged Pension Card or government-issued Health Care Card may be offered a discount to see their dermatologist provided that the entitlement card is produced at the time of your consultation. Your doctor will accept as full payment for services (not cosmetic) rendered for Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card holders (and those with white cards specific for skin disorders).

Medicare claims

A number of procedures are classified by Medicare as being purely cosmetic for which there is no Medicare rebate, for these services GST must be added. Your dermatologist will advise you if your procedure is not covered by Medicare prior to your treatment. Health funds are not able at this point in time to provide rebates for treatments.

Medicare online claims

Reception may lodge an electronic claim to Medicare on behalf of your doctor on the spot after payment of your fee. Payments are generally processed within 24 hours by Medicare provided your account details registered with Medicare are correct.
